KELLY Mensforth will play her first game of football on home turf when she takes the field for Sunbury in a curtain- raiser to this weekend’s Bendigo Bank Bombers match at the QEO.The 25-year-old grew up in Bendigo but, with no women’s team established in the central Victorian city, moved to Riddells Creek just over 12 months ago so she could realise her dream of playing Aussie rules.She won a premiership with the Lions in her debut season in the Victorian Women’s Football League’s north-west conference.She returns home this Sunday, when she’s expected to line up on a wing for her top-of-the-table team against third-placed North Ballarat.The match kicks off at 11am, ahead of the VFL showdown between the Bombers and North Ballarat.Mensforth said she was excited about the clash in front of a home-town crowd.“I have never actually played footy in Bendigo before,” the former Heathcote District league netballer said.“I was very surprised when the girls said we were going up to Bendigo for the match.”Sunbury, coached by Matt Geurts, did not lose a game on the way to its grand final win in 2009.Despite losing 10 of their premiership players, they remain undefeated so far in 2010.Mensforth said she was having a ball playing footy and didn’t regret her decision to move away from the region to fulfil her ambition.The web designer still works in Bendigo and commutes three days a week from her new home.She will have a personal cheer squad at the QEO, with family and friends planning to be in the crowd to urge her on from the sidelines.For the full story about the journey of a footy-mad girl who left home to follow her dreams and ended up winning a premiership, see Women in Sport in Monday’s edition of the Bendigo Advertiser.It will be a big day of football action on Sunday as goldfields rivals Bendigo and Ballarat do battle in the VFL’s 10th round.After a hat-trick of defeats, the Bombers have fallen to seventh place on the ladder.The task for the Shannon Grant-coached Bendigo will not be easy against the VFL’s reigning premiers.This Sunday’s clash between the Bombers and Roosters will include a 10-year reunion of Diggers and Bombers players, officials and supporters.An after-match function will include the naming of a Diggers-Bombers Team of the Decade.
