Heathcote starts favourite to win grand final showdown with Lockington-Bamawm United

03 Sep, 2010 11:11 PM
THE perfect season, or the one that got away.

That’s how 2010 will be remembered for Heathcote after today’s Heathcote District Football League grand final.

The Saints will meet Lockington-Bamawm United in the HDFL grand final at Colbinabbin.

For the Saints, they haven’t put a foot wrong yet this year, having won all 17 of their games.

But that will count for nothing if the Saints lose the one game that matters.

“It all comes down to Saturday. The home and away season and the second semi-final means nothing now, all that has done is get us to where we are,’’ Saints coach Brent Chapman said this week.

“But the hard work is yet to be done and we’ve got another hurdle we’ve got to get over this weekend.’’

While the Saints’ unblemished record may give the impression that today’s grand final is a foregone conclusion, it’s anything but.

In their two meetings this season the Cats have been good enough to lead the Saints at three quarter-time, only to be twice overrun in the last term.

“Lockington has been the side that has pushed us the most both times we’ve played them,’’ Chapman said.

“So we’re going to have to make sure we’re switched on right from the start.

“All the guys are really keen to get into it... it’s an exciting time.’’

The Saints have had an interrupted build-up to what is their third grand final in a row.

Since July 31 their only game has been their second semi-final win over Elmore on August 21.

“The good thing is we had our reserves go straight through to the grand final (from the second semi-final),’’ Chapman said.

“That means we’ve been able to do a lot of match-simulation work because we’ve had so many numbers on the track.’’

Meanwhile, first-year coach Chapman said while always confident he had a list capable of again challenging for the premiership, his expectations had clearly been exceeded in the Saints entering the grand final 17-0.

“At the start of the year we were written off by a lot of people after what we had lost from last season’s premiership side (nine players),’’ Chapman said.

“We were probably looked at as being a fair way behind Elmore and Lockington, which were the two teams that were really talked up during the pre-season.

“We were confident that with what we got we had covered what we lost, but to go through undefeated is a big effort.

“We’ve used 36 players this year in the seniors, which means there’s going to be 14 players playing in the reserves grand final who have played at least one senior game this year.

“That shows the depth of the club, which has been really important for us.’’

Today’s grand finals:

Seniors: Heathcote v LBU, 2.15pm. Reserves: Heathcote v LBU, 11.50am. Under-17: LBU v Huntly, 9.30am.
