JUSTIN Maddern bided his time in breaking into the Bendigo Bombers team, now it’s all about cementing his place in the side.Maddern, affectionately known as “Harry”, has played the past three games for the Bombers after he was rewarded for his outstanding start to the Bendigo Football League season with Kangaroo Flat, where he kicked 51 goals in seven games.Since forcing his way into the Bombers’ side, Maddern has kicked 11 goals in his three outings, including a bag of six in his first match against Geelong at Skilled Stadium a month ago.“I’m really enjoying it, so, hopefully, I can keep my spot and string a few games together,” Maddern said. The goalkicking star is particularly looking forward to stepping out on the newly redeveloped Queen Elizabeth Oval for today’s VFL clash with Williamstown. He will be the sole Bendigo representative in the side, which is dominated by Essendon-listed players and Melbourne-based VFL players.“The QEO looks sensational ... it’s just like carpet, so it’s going to be nice to run around on,” Maddern said.Maddern is part of a star-studded Bendigo forward line that today also boasts Matt Little, Tory Dickson, Scott Gumbleton, Mark Williams and Ariel Steinberg.Little (32 goals) and Dickson (30) sit second and third on the VFL goalkicking table, Gumbleton was the No.2 pick in the 2006 AFL national draft, Williams is a premiership player with Hawthorn and Steinberg was a second-round draft pick last year.“It has been pretty easy to come into a forward line like that and work with Matty Little and Tory Dickson and the rest of the guys,” said Maddern, who previously spent 2003 to 2007 on the Bombers list.
