Calivil United coach Ross Maxted and his team are more than happy to be the underdogs in this Saturday’s Loddon Valley Football League grand final against Bridgewater.
Although it’s a ninth consecutive premiership showdown for the Demons, this time they are not favourites.
But that does not faze Maxted, the team or the fans in the build-up to facing the Troy Auld-coached ‘Mean Machine’ from Bridgewater.
A huge plus for Calivil United is that Bridgewater’s sole defeat in the home-and-away series was to the Demons in the 14th round.
A 45-point victory on Calivil’s turf happened just two weeks after Maxted had again taken on the playing coach role at the club.
The only losses since Maxted took charge were to Pyramid Hill, which Calivil United beat in last Saturday’s preliminary final in extra time.
“We go into the grand final having played well under pressure,” Maxted said yesterday.
The Demons’ line-up has a great mix of grand final experience, and the pace and skill of some young guns who have not been daunted by the intensity of finals football.
Maxted said the biggest concern was the recovery from the hard-fought battle with the Bulldogs.
Calivil United’s never-give-up approach was to the fore in a preliminary final played in some torrential downpours and on a waterlogged Inglewood oval.
“It will be a light week at training, but grand final week usually is,” Maxted said.
Demons’ key forward Nick Manley was cleared of any major damage to a cheekbone and will be fit to play in the grand final at Golden Square’s Backhaus Oval.
