Calivil United triumphs in extra time to win preliminary final against Pyramid Hill

05 Sep, 2010 09:47 PM
CALIVIL United fought its way into a ninth consecutive Loddon Valley Football League grand final after Saturday’s preliminary final against Pyramid Hill went into extra time.

A superb battle between the Demons and Bulldogs went into overtime on the Inglewood turf.

Skills were outstanding in the conditions, which varied between torrential rain to bursts of sunshine, as Calivil went on to win 49-41.

Goals were at a premium all match, and points became valuable as the day went on.

Pyramid Hill was first to goal when Sam Kennedy was on the end of Matthew Scott’s long kick.

The Demons replied through Glen Scholtes, before the Bulldogs’ David Fevaleaki scooped up the ball one-handed, dodged some opponents and goaled from 30m out.

A Nick Manley goal from the pocket gave Calivil United a one-point lead at quarter-time.

The Demons had the majority of the play in the second quarter as their midfield and onball brigade led by Aaron Demeo, Henry Miller, Lloyd and Ross Maxted set up a lot of attacks.

A Lloyd Maxted kick went over two opponents and Nick Balic soccered the only goal of the quarter.

Pyramid Hill’s workrate around the packs lifted markedly in the third quarter.

The Shawn Filo-coached Bulldogs added six points to nil to be within a point as the fourth quarter began.

Pyramid Hill’s run rolled on as a Luan Marsh left-foot snap skidded through an open goal.

Marsh’s point was soon followed by an unguarded Glen Garlett marking and goaling to lead by 13 points.

The heat was right on the Demons.

Heath Richardson marked in square and goaled to the delight of Calivil’s fans.

A diving smother by Pyramid Hill’s Brad Fawcett on the scoreboard wing epitomised the courage and sheer will of all players to keep on going.

Demons’ coach Ross Maxted soccered the ball into attack where Jordan Lea swooped and goaled to make it a two-point game.

Two more points by the Demons made it 37-all and the siren sounded shortly after to end the quarter.

Five-minute halves of extra time were then played.

The Dogs racked up a hat-trick of behinds before Heath Richardson coolly handpassed the ball from the pocket to Brock Rogers in the clear to goal and put Calivil United in front.

After swapping ends it was Brock Rogers who picked up the spilt ball from a marking contest and snapped truly to lead by nine points.

Pyramid Hill added another point, but the siren sounded soon after and it was joy for Calivil United and despair for Pyramid Hill’s players and fans.

Calivil United coach Ross Maxted said the victory typified the team’s “never give up” attitude.

“This win is one of the best I have been involved with,” Maxed said of a career that includes many premierships.

“Today was always going to be a tough contest against a strong opponent, but also because of the conditions.

“We just had to keep on working and never give in.”

The only team to beat Bridgewater this season, Calivil United will tackle the Mean Machine in this Saturday’s grand final.

On the netball court, Mitiamo scored a 17-goal victory in the A-grade preliminary final against Calivil United.

There will be six clubs represented in the netball grand finals at Backhaus Oval in Golden Square.
