 Bulldogs' waiting game

Bulldogs' waiting game

31 Jul, 2009 10:16 AM
THE committee of the Gisborne Football-Netball Club is still at least two weeks away from deciding on where the future of the club lies.

Gisborne is presently weighing up whether to remain in the Bendigo Football League, where it has played since 2000 and won four senior premierships, or accept an offer to become the Ballarat Football League’s 12th team next year.

The Gisborne committee met on Wednesday night, where it had hoped to decide upon a recommendation of whether to stay or go.

However, Bulldogs president Graeme Love said yesterday the committee was unable to reach a decision on Wednesday night.

“As you can appreciate, it’s a very big decision for the club to make,’’ Love said.

“We’re not going to hurry it and make the wrong decision, so we decided last night that there are a couple more things we want to pursue.

"So as soon as we do that, we will then make our decision, which will probably be in two to three weeks.’’

Ballarat announced its intentions to secure Gisborne as its newest club on May 30, with one of its key selling points being their belief the Bulldogs would be as much as $35,000 better off per year in their league.

Officials from the Ballarat league attended Gisborne’s last home game against Golden Square on July 18, while they have also addressed the committee.

Gisborne tomorrow hosts Castlemaine at Gardiner Reserve in what will be the Bulldogs’ fourth straight home game.

Castlemaine will be without skipper James O’Brien after he was suspended by the tribunal on Wednesday night for two matches for striking star Sandhurst midfielder Lee Coghlan in the first quarter of the Magpies’ 27-point win over the Dragons last week.

Also missing tomorrow’s 15th round of the BFL season will be Kyneton’s Ken Cummings, who was suspended for one match for an abusive language charge from last Saturday’s game against Strathfieldsaye.

Kyneton plays Sandhurst at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Why doesn't the BFNL approach Sunbury to join Bendigo League? With a rail line direct to Gisborne, Kyneton, Castlemaine, Kangaroo Flat & Bendigo, I think Sunbury would fit in well. Also there is the new freeway.
