THE Bendigo Football League is proving to be the competition of the power forwards early in the 2010 season.
Kyneton’s James Condos, Kangaroo Flat’s Justin Maddern and Golden Square’s Grant Weeks have all been the talk of the BFL for their explosive goalkicking exploits over the first three rounds.
Between them the trio have already kicked 71 goals this year, and currently rank as the three best forwards across country Victoria.
Condos leads the BFL - and VCFL - goalkicking table with 25 for the Tigers.
Recruited to Kyneton from Essendon Grammar in the Amateurs, the former Western Bulldogs rookie has quickly built a cult following at the Tigers following his returns of 10, three and 12 goals in the opening three rounds.
Condos, 27, booted 12 goals for Kyneton against Kangaroo Flat last Saturday - including six in the third quarter - despite the Tigers losing by 41 points.
Maddern, last year’s BFL Ron Best medallist, has kicked 24 goals for the Roos.
He kicked eight of those goals in the first quarter of the season against Gisborne in round one, while last week he kicked six goals in the last term as the Roos ran over the top of Kyneton.
Like Condos, Weeks is a new player into the league this year, having joined Golden Square after kicking 124 goals for Colbinabbin in the Heathcote District Football League last season.
Weeks has stepped up with ease to the next level with bags of nine, five and eight goals in his first three games, although the impact he has had, despite coming from a minor league, should be no surprise given he is a former VFL player with the Bendigo Bombers.
The last player to kick 100 goals in a home and away season in the BFL was Castlemaine’s Steven Oliver, who booted 132 in the Magpies’ premiership year of 2000, in which he only had 11 goals after three rounds.
On present form, Condos will end the home and away season with 150 goals, Maddern 144 and Weeks 132.
While it’s highly unlikely the star trio will maintain their early-season averages, at least one should become the first forward in a decade to reach the century in the home and away rounds.
