Germans primed for tilt at Madison

04 Mar, 2010 09:30 AM
GERMAN duo Leif Lampater and Christian Grasmann will be aiming to continue their good form in this Sunday night’s McCaig Daiken Airconditioning Bendigo International Madison at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

Lampater and Grasmann overcame jetlag and a quality field to win last Friday night’s 50km Melbourne Madison at the Joe Ciavola Velodrome.

The Germans only arrived in Australia last Thursday morning from a lengthy international flight, but put the less-than-ideal preparation behind them the following night to triumph.

“We know each other very well and were able to use the sprints well, which was the key for us winning last week,” Grasmann said yesterday.

“We’re in good form, we’ve had some good training over the past few days, so we’re really enjoying it here in Bendigo.

“We’ve now got over that jetlag . . . we’re sleeping and staying awake when we should be and are looking forward to Sunday’s race.”

For Grasmann, this is his first trip to Australia.

Lampater contested last year’s Madison in Bendigo for the first time, finishing third with Franco Marvulli in the 200-lap race won by Eaglehawk’s Glenn O’Shea and Geelong’s Leigh Howard.

But Lampater - who has won World Track Cycling Cups in team pursuit and twice in the Madison - did taste some success in Bendigo last year, winning the 25-lap RetireInvest criterium through the city’s CBD.

Tomorrow night he will be hoping to kick-start his carnival in the same fashion when the criterium is raced from 6.30pm in Pall Mall.

This Sunday’s Madison will be the last major race of the season for Lampater and Grasmann before the German road season starts in May.
