Cycling battle to be raged on streets

CYCLING action is right in the heart of Bendigo tonight when stars from near and far contest the Bendigo International Madison.The RetireInvest-backed street classic will be contested by many of the madison contenders.Victorious two years ago, Germany’s Leif Lampater will pursue back-to-back victories after last year’s criterium was washed out.Lampater beat Eaglehawk’s Glenn O’Shea and Geelong’s Leigh Howard in the street duel in 2009.O’Shea and Howard went on to achieve back-to-back madison victories two nights later.Although Lampater’s major focus is on trying to beat reigning world madison champions Cameron Meyer and Leigh Howard in Sunday’s track battle, he will be keen to start the weekend on a winning note.The same applies for O’Shea, who returns to his home town to team with long-time coach Tim Decker in the madison.Decker is lining up for a record 15th madison start.A tough criterium circuit takes in Pall Mall before swinging left at Howard Place and then through Rosalind Park.The 30-lap duel starts at 6.30pm opposite the Shamrock Hotel.Meanwhile, Geelong-based cyclist Tom Bastian won last night’s Frank McCaig Memorial Wheelrace (1600m) at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.Bastian marked a successful return to his old home town to contest the event honouring cycling legend Frank McCaig.Racing off the 200m mark, Bastian powered to victory ahead of Ash Harding (155m), Jarrod Hartley (285) and Adrian Kowal (255m). Tomorrow’s athletics action at the Tom Flood Sports Centre in Barnard Street starts at 1.30pm when the women’s 120m heats are run.
