WEDDERBURN has claimed its first premiership since 1989 after winning the Upper Loddon Cricket Association grand final against Bridgewater by two wickets on Saturday.
Chasing Bridgewater’s total of 187 at Inglewood, Wedderburn was in trouble at 6-88 and looking like its premiership drought was going to extend another frustrating year.
But a match-winning seventh-wicket partnership between Brad Weston and Allan Colbert ensured Wedderburn would be celebrating on Saturday night.
Weston and Colbert shared in a 92-run stand as they took the score to 180 and put Wedderburn on the brink of victory.
The partnership ended when Colbert (45) was caught by Rod Smythe off the bowling of Alexander Collins eight runs from victory.
And when Steve Giorlando (0) was bowled by Collins to leave Wedderburn 8-183, Bridgewater was back in with a chance of winning.
However, Weston and captain Jake Hayes (4 n.o.) safely saw Wedderburn over the line in a thrilling ending as it finished at 8-191.
Weston was the hero with the bat for Wedderburn.
Starting his innings with the score 2-11, he finished unbeaten on 69 to cap a superb season in which he won the league batting average with 77.7.
Wedderburn - which had began the day at 1-0 following the dismissal of Ken Steel last week - also got a solid contribution from No.3 Jye Arnold (34).
Arnold and Weston put on 49 for the third wicket, but when Arnold was dismissed by Smythe it sparked a collapse in which Wedderburn lost 4-28 to fall from 2-60 to 6-88.
Wedderburn last won a premiership in the 1988-89 season when it played in the Donald District Cricket Association.
The only member of that team who also played in Saturday’s triumph was veteran bowler Ian Gould, who took 3-20 off 14 overs in Bridgewater’s innings.
“I’m really rapt for the young fellas in the side, because we had a young team this season,” Gould said.
“We were 6-88 and then came from nowhere; it was just a real gritty win and I couldn’t be more prouder of the boys.”
To cap a memorable season for Wedderburn, its under-17 team also won the grand final.
For Bridgewater - which was striving to win back-to-back flags - Collins took 5-66 off a marathon 29 overs.
The other multiple wicket-taker for Bridgewater was spinner Smythe, who claimed 2-52 off 31 overs.
