Title up for grabs

15 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS and Bendigo United will lock horns for the Bendigo District Cricket Association premiership in next weekend’s grand final.

The two sides comfortably won their semi-finals yesterday, both chasing down targets with ease.

At Atkins Street, Bendigo United bundled out top-of-the-ladder Golden Square, with the Redbacks trumping the reigning premiers by seven wickets.

Having been 4-25 early on Saturday after a super opening spell from the Redbacks’ Miggy Podosky (5-41), Golden Square recovered to post 192.

The fightback was led by captain Grant Connelly (104) and opener David Hickman (50), who put on 146 for the fifth wicket.

Resuming yesterday at 2-14 after facing 15 overs Saturday, the Redbacks were led to victory by captain Matt Pinniger, who also made a century.

Pinniger made a fine 126 not out in the Redbacks’ total of 3-193.

To cap a disappointing weekend for Golden Square, all four of its sides - first, second and third XI, and under-17s - were beaten in their semis.

But it was a different story for Bendigo United, which also has its second and third XI contesting grand finals.

At Bell Oval, the semi-final between Strathdale-Maristians and Eaglehawk was over by 1pm yesterday.

After winning the toss and batting on Saturday, the Hawks could muster just 107, after earlier being 5-15 in the 10th over thanks to a brilliant new-ball spell from Suns’ 17-year-old Braden Hocking (4-24).

After their demolition with the ball, the Suns lost four wickets in reaching a score of 4-109, although they had some anxious moments early in their innings when they were 3-20.

The last time the Suns and Bendigo United met in a grand final was in 1994-95 when the Suns won by five wickets, which remains their last flag.

Meanwhile, in the Emu Valley Cricket Association, Spring Gully has amazingly qualified for the grand final after a memorable semi-final win against United at Ewing Park.

In a game that went over two innings, Spring Gully was bowled out for 35 on Saturday in reply to United’s 51.

After United made 103 in its second innings yesterday, Spring Gully chased its target of 120 off 27 overs with one ball to spare, winning eight wickets down.

Spring Gully will meet Sedgwick in the grand final, which beat Marong by 35 runs in their semi-final.

Meanwhile, Dingee won yesterday’s Northern United Cricket Association grand final, while Wedderburn won the premiership in the Upper Loddon Cricket Association on Saturday.
