STRATHDALE-MARISTIANS’ decision to bat first against Strathfieldsaye on Saturday backfired as the Suns were dismissed for just 147 in round seven of the Bendigo District Cricket Association. While they may be regarded as the standout side in the BDCA, for the second time this season the Suns – who were bowled out for 129 against Sandhurst in round three – showed their batting can be brittle. It was a bowler’s wicket at Tannery Lane and the Jets made the most of it as the Suns were dismissed in the 68th over.Early the Suns were 1-52 in the 20th over, but the dismissal of the in-form Cameron Taylor (38 off 64) sparked a collapse. In the space of 10 overs the Suns lost 4-13 to crash to 5-65, with Taylor, Jono Davidson (10 off 14), Dom Taylor (4 off 27) and Ben DeAraugo (1 off 5) the players out during the flurry of wicketsThe Devanny brothers – Ben and Cory – took two wickets each during the four-wicket burst.Only three players made more than 20 for the Suns – Cameron Taylor, Ben Smith (33 off 74) and Andrew Chalkley (27 off 64).Cory Devanny was outstanding with the ball for the Jets, taking 3-29 off 15 overs. The Jets didn’t start their chase, despite 14 overs still being left in the day after the change of innings. The Suns’ innings ended at 6.09pm after 52 minutes of play had been lost to rain earlier in the day. However, with players off the field at 6.15pm for what should have been a change of innings, the umpires abandoned play, much to the frustration of the Suns.● A career-best haul from Miggy Podosky helped Bendigo United take control of its game against Kangaroo Flat at Dower Park.Podosky claimed the first six-wicket haul of his first XI career, taking 6-24 off 15 overs as the Roos were routed for a disappointing 118 in 60 overs. The rot started for the Roos from the outset when they were 2-4 in the fourth over following the dismissals of Andrew Hosking (4 off 6) and Brad Perrow (0 off 3) by Podosky.By the 24th over the Roos had crashed to 5-43.Veteran Brad Orton was the only Roos’ player to make more than 20.Orton compiled 43 off 68 (five boundaries and one six) before he was trapped lbw to Podosky playing across the line, leaving the Roos 6-99 in the 44th over. The next best of the Roos’ batsmen was opener Mitchell Collins (17 off 70), while first-gamer Nathan Newlan – who earlier in the day scored an unbeaten 101 in the under-17s – put a high price on his wicket, facing 97 balls for 14.While Podosky was the star for the Redbacks with his six-for, plus a catch, wily spinner Nick Crawford claimed 3-27 off 22 overs – his first wickets for 35 days. The Redbacks went to stumps at 1-64 off 22 overs.Wayne Fidler (25 off 63) was the batsman out, with Mark Di Fede (29, five boundaries) and night watchman Crawford (8) to resume the innings this Saturday.● A last-wicket partnership of 36 between Rhys Irwin and Travis Colley allowed White Hills to reach 210 against Eaglehawk at Integrating Technology Oval. The Demons had been 9-174, before Irwin (22) and Colley (19 n.o.) frustrated the Hawks as they took the score past 200.Earlier, Kyle Patten (53 off 120, six boundaries) and Daniel Larke (32 off 91) shared in a 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The pair took the score from 3-69 to 126, before both fell within two overs of each other. For the first time this season Hawks paceman Richard Tibbett took multiple wickets, picking up 3-63 off 17 overs. In his 200th first XI game, Jason Abbott took 2-40 off 19 overs, while Andrew Smith (2-49) also took two wickets. The Hawks were 0-5 at stumps.● Bendigo found some form with the bat against Sandhurst at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.A week after being bowled out for a meagre 85 against Bendigo United, the Goers compiled 263 against the Dragons.Teenager John Howorth made his first half-century at first XI level, top-scoring with 68 and hitting four boundaries.Michael Hill finished unbeaten on 59 off 97, while opener Marcus McKern (41 off 71) and skipper Hayden Polglase (41 off 89) were also solid contributors.Bendigo had been 5-146 in the 52nd over, before a 100-run partnership between Howorth and Hill. However, when Howorth was dismissed by Quinton Bentley in the 77th over, the Goers’ last five wickets fell for just 17 runs.Bentley bowled well for the Dragons to take 4-67 off 25 overs, spinner Dylan Gibson took 3-30 off 10 overs, while Thomas Wilson (2-62) picked up the key wickets of Polglase and Mark Ryan (5).● Huntly-North Bendigo’s clash with Golden Square at Strauch Reserve reverted to ordinary conditions.Play began on time at 1pm, but just nine balls were bowled before heavy rain forced play to be halted for two hours. At stumps the Power was 6-110, with the mainstay of the innings having been captain Linc McRae.McRae batted for 174 balls and hit four boundaries in making 50, before he was adjudged lbw to James Pietromonaco (1-23) eight minutes before stumps. The Power had been well-placed at 1-68 in the 37th over, but in the space of two overs lost Brodie McRae (22), Ryan Grundy (0) and Isaac Hogan (0) to fall to 4-69.Spinner Jamie Fitzgibbon has 3-23 off 13 overs for Square, which will be aiming to dismiss Josh Collinson (7 n.o.) and Sam Johnston (0 n.o.) early this Saturday to get stuck into the Power tail.
