STRATHFIELDSAYE moved to within half a game of the Bendigo District Cricket Association top four after scoring an upset win over reigning premier Strathdale-Maristians on Saturday.Veteran Adam Hargreaves was the hero for the Jets, with his 91 ensuring the home side had few troubles in chasing down Strathdale’s modest total of 147.Strathdale was always going to need early wickets if it was to put the Jets under pressure. However, Hargreaves and youngster Liam Smith (27) saw off the new ball with few troubles, putting on 66 for the first wicket. The dismissals of Smith and Jets’ skipper Ben Gunn (12) in quick succession gave the Suns a sniff of victory, but Hargreaves, Luke Millard (14) and Greg Lyon (27) saw the Jets over the line for the loss of three wickets. The Jets’ batting line-up faded after victory was secured as they lost their final seven wickets for 42 runs to be all out for 199.Off-spinner Dom Taylor was the pick of Strathdale’s bowlers, claiming 4-43 off 29 overs.Paceman Braden Hocking tore through Strathfieldsaye’s lower-order to take 4-25 off nine overs.Eaglehawk’s Jason Abbott fell an agonisingly four runs short of a century in his 200th first XI game.Abbott’s 96 was the catalyst for the Borough’s big total of 6-310 in reply to White Hills’ 210.The opening batsman looked set to make his first century of the summer before he was adjudged lbw to White Hills medium-pacer Darren Gregory.Abbott has now made three half-centuries for the season.Skipper Matt Fitt (89) also made his third half-century of the summer.Fitt rarely looked troubled by the young White Hills attack before being dismissed for 89 shortly before stumps.Sam Walker (66 not out) cashed in on the good work of Eaglehawk’s top-order to post his second career first XI half-century with the Borough. The win moved Eaglehawk into fourth place at the Christmas break.White Hills had little to smile about, with all-rounders Aaron Monro and Gregory the only multiple wicket-takers.Sandhurst’s Nick Scullie became the first player to score a century on the new-look QEO when he guided the Dragons to victory over Bendigo on Saturday.Scullie batted through the Sandhurst innings, scoring 100 not out as the Dragons chased down Bendigo’s 263 for the loss of four wickets.Scullie was the mainstay of handy partnerships with Dylan Gibson (46), Anthony West (25) and Mark Holland (19).When Holland was caught on the deep mid-wicket fence the Dragons were 4-181 and the Goers were still in the game. But Scullie and Shane Robinson (60 not out) steadied the Sandhurst ship to add an unbeaten 88 for the fifth wicket.Michael Hill continued his good for Bendigo taking two wickets. The win puts Sandhurst back in the mix for the top four, while Bendigo remains in last place and is desperate to have former Test batsman Matthew Elliott return to the side from injury after Christmas.Bendigo United star Heath Behrens gave the BDCA a reminder of his class by making 96 in the Redbacks big win over Kangaroo Flat.In just his third innings of the summer, Behrens made the most of his long stint at the crease. The left-hander walked to the crease with his side needing two runs to win after Mark Di Fede (68) and Nick Crawford (27) had done all the hard work to reel in Kangaroo Flat’s total of 117.Behrens added 156 for the fourth wicket with Zac Mona (56 not out) before edging a Liam Jones delivery to Nathan Hamblin. The easy win consolidated top spot for the Redbacks, while Kangaroo Flat now appears out of the finals race.Huntly-North Bendigo held Golden Square to a draw thanks to a club record 10th wicket partnership between Josh Collinson and Matt Rule.Huntly-North Bendigo resumed at 6-110 after the game had been reverted to ordinary conditions following heavy rain on day one.Collinson and Rule came together at 9-160 with Golden Square in control of the game. However, the unheralded duo frustrated the Golden Square attack by keeping the scoreboard ticking over. They put the game out of Golden Square’s reach by adding 84 for the 10th wicket before Collinson was eventually dismissed for 81.Rule finished a gallant 28 not out.Golden Square bowled a marathon 115 overs for the innings, with spinner Jamie Fitzgibbon the pick of the attack claiming 4-64 off 26 overs. The three points was enough for Golden Square to maintain third spot on the ladder, while Huntly-North Bendigo slipped out of the top four. The Power are in fifth place but such is the tightness of the competition they are only one game behind second-placed Strathdale.
