Redbacks topple ladder leaders

BENDIGO United’s solid form in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo District Cricket Association continued yesterday when it beat ladder-leader Golden Square in their one-day match at Wade Street.After making 4-188 off their 45 overs, the Redbacks restricted Square to 8-169 to win their fourth game.The key contributors with the bat for the Redbacks were opener Wayne Fidler (54), Harry Donegan (37 n.o.) and Nick Crawford (34 n.o.).The standout with the ball for Golden Square was Luke Baird, who took 1-21 off nine overs.Square was in early trouble in its innings when it fell to 2-2, and later 3-22.Jason Johnson (61 n.o.) and Scott Johnson (56) both continued their fine seasons, but their knocks weren’t enough as Golden Square fell 20 runs short of its target.Crawford (2-27) and Miggy Podosky (2-32) took two wickets each for the Redbacks.● White Hills won its second game when it defended its score of 9-150 against BendigoIn reply the Goers were bowled out for 139 at Atkins Street.Aaron Monro top-scored with 52 off 97 balls (three fours, two sixes) for the Demons.Monro scored just nine runs off the first 70 balls he faced, before belting 43 off his last 27.Left-armer Michael Hill bowled exceptionally well for the Goers to take 5-15 off nine overs.Bendigo didn’t have enough contributors with the bat in its chase, with only opener Damian Wust (37 off 83) and Hill (28 off 43) passing 20.Darren Gregory picked up 4-19 for the Demons, while Monro capped a fine game by taking 3-30.● Sandhurst also notched up win number two with an 81-run victory over Huntly-North Bendigo at Strauch Reserve.The Dragons had been 3-24, before innings’ from captain Anthony West (61) and Mark Holland (50) helped the score to a winning 201.Matt Rule returned the fine figures of 5-22 for the Power, who were bowled out for just 120 in reply, with Brodie McRae (32) and Brett Elvey (30 n.o.) combining for more than half the side’s runs.Elias Bowe took the bowling honours for the Dragons with his 4-17 off eight overs.● Reigning premier Strathdale-Maristians beat Kangaroo Flat by five wickets at Dower Park.After winning the toss and batting, the Roos made 6-172.Opener Andrew Hosking anchored the innings with 57 off 115 (four boundaries and one six) as he batted into the 39th over.Captain Adam Burns finished unbeaten on 25 off 29.The multiple wicket-takers for the Suns were spinners Craig Howard (2-35), who opened the bowling, and Dom Taylor (2-32).In reply, the Suns chased the target down in the 38th over as they reached 5-175. For the fifth time in nine innings this season opener Cameron Taylor (64 off 89, six boundaries) passed 50, while Jono Davidson made a brisk 45 not out off 50.● At Tannery Lane, Eaglehawk smashed a disappointing Strathfieldsaye by 135 runs.After making 9-215 batting first, the Hawks then routed the Jets for just 80 in 29 overs, with Jonathan Andrea picking up 4-11.Only Greg Lyon (21) and Ben Gunn (19) made double figures.The Hawks were led with the bat by Matt White (48), Jason Abbott (40) and Shane Herdman (37 n.o.).Spinner Andrew Stove took 3-55 off nine overs for the Jets.
