REBEL Day began as a bet when punters at a pub decided they could swing a bat and send down the leather better than the nearby cricket club.
Tomorrow, the annual match between Raywood Cricket Club and the Raywood Hotel will hit the 10-year milestone on Raywood’s turf.
Raywood Cricket Club’s Mick Pierce said the day will be bigger and better than ever.
“It all started when some of the patrons at the Raywood Hotel thought they were better than the cricket club,’’ he said.
“It’s a family day, we have a Twenty20 match with the seniors and during the break the girls and kids have a go.
“About 100 people turn up from the surrounding areas.
“It’s going to be just a really fun day and even better because this is our 10th year.’’
But it won’t be all fun and games, with a fierce rivalry developing over the years between the Raywood Cricket Club and the `Rebels’ from Raywood Hotel.
“So far it’s five to four in favour of Raywood Cricket Club,’’ Pierce said.
“We’re not going to let them catch up to us.’’
Rebel Day has welcomed the support of local businesses, including Arro Asphalt Pavers, who provided funds towards uniforms for the players and in a first for the event, the winning team in the girls match will be awarded the Ken Kimberley award, in memory of Ken who died last year.
The Rebel Day match will be followed by the traditional lunch of lamb and gravy rolls with coleslaw.
The match hits off at 11am tomorrow at the Raywood Recreation Reserve.
