A DOMINANT performance in the state final at the MCG secured the Kanga 8s cricket title for a team of Kennington Primary School students on Wednesday.The team won its four matches against the best grade 5 and 6 school boys’ teams from across Victoria, but saved its best for last with a crushing 152 run win in the final.Playing the final against Karoo Primary School from Melbourne, the Kennington boys restricted the opposition to 7-85 and replied with 237 for the loss of just two wickets.The 10 Bendigo players – some of whom play cricket against each other for local clubs on weekends – improved in every match.They beat St Joseph’s Wonthaggi by 20 runs, before recording wins of more than 50 and 80 in the next two matches.Kennington Primary School teacher and team coach Luke Monaghan praised the team for its play and on being gracious winners.“The boys played exceptionally well, they controlled every match,” Monaghan said. “They handled it really well, they didn’t feel any pressure playing at the MCG.”The players won medallions and a trophy, plus a laptop for their school.Kanga 8s is a modified version of cricket where each player must bat and bowl and they are rewarded with bonus runs for playing straight or taking wickets.The Kennington team won regional finals in Bendigo and Shepparton. More than 1700 boys and almost 1200 girls teams contested Kanga 8s.
