Harper strikes superb century for Bendigo's under-13A team

26 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
BENDIGO Cricket Club’s Sam Harper has capped a historic innings, becoming the only under-13 player to score a century in more than six seasons in the Bendigo District Cricket Association.

The 12-year-old Crusoe College student struck 100 not out in last weekend’s match against White Hills, despite being retired early in the match.

On returning to the crease after all other batman had been dismissed, Sam clocked up his first century in his short cricketing career.

“I felt pretty good and happy about it,’’ he said.

“I’ve scored 59 runs before, but that was my closest.

“I didn’t really think about making 100 runs.’’

Harper, who said Shane Watson was his cricketing idol, celebrated his achievement on field and is confident he can achieve the feat again.

“I raised my bat and took my helmet off to celebrate,’’ he said.

“I think I could probably make a 100 again this season.’

’Not only did Sam outdo all the other under-13 batman, he also outscored his older brother Tom, who recently made an impressive 75 runs for his under-15 Golden Square team.

But despite his obvious cricket talent, Sam is still unsure whether he will focus his talents on cricket or football with Golden Square.

“Yeah, I’d like to play state cricket, either that or footy,’’ he said.

“I’m a centre half forward at Golden Square.’’

The Bendigo Cricket Club under-13A team has had a undefeated season, but will face its greatest challenge this weekend when it takes on fellow unbeaten team Strathfieldsaye at Ken Wust Oval in Quarry Hill.
