THE Bendigo District Cricket Association will host its night of nights tonight when it holds its Cricketer of the Year awards ceremony.
The Cricketer of the Year will be held at The Bendigo Club in Strathdale.
A tight count is tipped, with a number of leading chances to take out the BDCA’s most coveted individual award.
For the past two years the player who has won The Advertiser Player of the Year Award, which is this season sponsored by Bicknell’s, has gone on to win the BDCA Player of the Year Award.
This season The Advertiser-Bicknell’s Player of the Year Award was taken out by Golden Square all-rounder Scott Johnson with 39 votes.
If he is to win tonight, Johnson would become just the fifth player in the award’s history to claim it twice, having previously tied with Kangaroo Flat’s Tony Taig in 2000-01.
Kangaroo Flat skipper Adam Burns is also rated a strong chance to win the award for the second time, having previously won it in 2003-04.
That year it was Burns’ bowling that resulted in him polling enough votes to win, but this season it’s his batting in which he has made 627 runs that would have caught the attention of the umpires.
The other top fancy in the award is Bendigo United off-spinner Nick Crawford, who topped the competition for wickets with 35.
Crawford finished just one vote away from tying for the award with Strathdale-Maristians’ Craig Howard last season.
Golden Square’s Phil Hetherington, with 735 runs, should also poll well.
