Kum Too warms up for battle

09 Sep, 2010 10:47 PM
A STATE boxing champion on three occasions, Jared Kum Too aims to make a winning return to Bendigo at tomorrow night’s tournament.

The 24-year-old will feature in the headline act against Melton’s Ashley McDermott in the 67kg division.

Now living and working in Broome, Kum Too has spent this week warming up for the contest in Bendigo.

“It’s great to be back,” he said after another arduous sparring session with Rochester’s Xavier Leahy.

A dual state titleholder in the lightweight class, Kum Too has moved up to junior welterweight.

Last month he captured the WA title with a second-round knockout.

Kum Too said he was approached by Bendigo trainer-promoter Frank Pianto earlier this year about heading back east to again compete before a home crowd.

“It’s been a great build-up,” Kum Too said of workouts with Leahy and Pianto in the lead-up to the contest at Flora Hill Stadium.

This week’s workouts have included 24 rounds of sparring, plus more than 90 minutes striking the pads with Pianto.

“Preparation has gone really well,” Kum Too said.

Last weekend he fought Tasmania’s Luke Woods, who will fight at next month’s Commonwealth Games..

From Maiden Gully, Kum Too has not fought in Bendigo for several years.

A break from boxing lasted several years.

Kum Too said he decided to make a comeback to the sport last September.

“It was really tough at first,” he said of training.

Kum Too’s comeback was on the Anzac Day weekend.

He has since racked up three wins and two defeats.

“A goal is to qualify for next year’s Australian championships.”

The plasterer said his boxing workouts in Broome have been done with John Whelan.

“He has really helped me a lot, mainly with pad work, but also building up fitness and strength.”

Kum Too’s boxing feats in 2003-04 earned the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund award in the Bendigo Advertiser Sports Star of the Year.

The long-running awards are now supported by WIN Television and mecu credit union.

Tomorrow night’s action at Flora Hill Stadium includes Lee Templar and Hayden Kelly in the Central Victorian Footballers Challenge.

Tickets are $20 and available at the door, or tables of 10 are $500 and can be booked with Pianto on 0401 306 308.

Doors to the Keck Street stadium open at 5pm, with the first fight about 6.30pm.
