Big time boxing in Bendigo

04 Jul, 2009 10:23 AM
BENDIGO boxers Justin Whitehead and Ben Costello face huge challenges in tonight’s professional boxing bouts at Flora Hill Stadium.

Whitehead will face an opponent who holds a distinct height and weight advantage.

A Commonwealth Games representative and the reigning WBF Asia Pacific titleholder, Whitehead will take on New Zealand’s Hiriwa TeRangi in the heavyweight showdown at the Keck Street venue.

Echuca-based boxing trainer, Barry Quinlan has teamed with one of the country’s greats, Barry Michael to put on tonight’s bouts in Bendigo.

“Justin faces a huge challenge, but he is trained well and in form,’’ Quinlan said.

“TeRangi has won a New Zealand championship, and is a big, powerful competitor.’’

The New Zealand star is 198cm and weighs more than 120kg.

“We know that TeRangi is a heavy hitter, but so is Justin.’’

The super heavyweight bout is scheduled to be six rounds lasting three minutes.

“Justin’s training has gone really well, and he will use this fight as a lead-up to the Victorian championships,’’ Quinlan said.

“We are still in negotiations for Justin to take on John Hopoate later in the year.’’

Costello will be determined to achieve another hometown victory when he takes on New Zealand’s Dion McNabney in the junior middleweight contest.

From Eaglehawk, Costello has achieved a win-loss record of 3-1 since he joined the professional ranks.

“Ben is in very good form. He won his latest bout by knockout,’’ Quinlan said.

“He is taking on a far more experienced opponent, who is ranked number four in the New Zealand pro ranks.’’

Melbourne’s Daniel Iannazzo will take on Kanit Phudbuadong in the super bantamweight bout.

Albury’s Matt Hassler will take on Steve Maxwell in the junior middleweight class.

The card will include Justin Nolan versus Ron Najjar in cruiserweight, and Rochester’s Xavier Leahy in an exhibition welterwight contest.

Tickets will be available at the door from 6.30pm. Fight night is scheduled to start at 7pm.
