THE Bendigo Bank Spirit has moved into third position on the WNBL ladder after a last-gasp interstate win over Canberra at the AIS Arena yesterday.
A buzzer-beater from Kristi Harrower gave the Spirit a thrilling 71-70 win over the Capitals and improved Bendigo’s record to 10-6.
The Spirit looked headed for a defeat when they trailed by eight points with 1:47 remaining in the last quarter.
But in a remarkable ending to the game, the Spirit scored the last nine points of the match to secure one of the club’s most memorable wins in its five-year history.
Harrower and Tess Magden both made field-goals, and when Heather Oliver nailed a three-pointer off a Harrower assist after being subbed in, the Spirit trailed by one point with 46 seconds remaining.
With the margin one point, a missed shot from Canberra’s Nicole Hunt was rebounded by the Spirit’s Gabe Richards.
Later, with six seconds remaining on the clock and Canberra still ahead by one point, the Spirit inbounded the ball following a foul to Magden, who penetrated the lane and passed to Harrower, who knocked down the two-point jumper as the buzzer sounded.
“It was a really great win for us,” Spirit coach Bernie Harrower said.
“It was a win where we certainly got out of jail.”
The victory improved the Spirit’s winning streak to five games.
Richards led the Spirit in scoring with 16 points, while Magden added 14, Deanna Smith 13 and Chelsea Aubry 11 to go with her team-high six rebounds.
Harrower finished with nine points and a game-high seven assists.
The Spirit travels interstate against next weekend for games against Adelaide and West Coast.
