The Bendigo Spirit looks set to challenge the Women’s National Basketball League’s best this season, with several key signings increasing the team’s depth for its 2010-11 campaign.
Among the Spirit’s major pick-ups is the re-signing of Canadian import Chelsea Aubry.
Aubry dominated for the Spirit last season as the second highest scorer and rebounder in the team, including a 28-point individual effort against grand finalist Bulleen.
The Spirit roster has also been bolstered by the signing of AIS young gun Tess Magden.
The 19-year-old averaged 12 points and six rebounds for the AIS last season.
Magden has recently dominated in the South Australian State League, averaging an outstanding 32 points, 13 rebounds and three steals for the Eastern Mavericks.
Bendigo Spirit captain and club general manager Kristi Harrower, who will return to the Spirit this season after representing Australia at the world championships in September, said her side would have a great depth of talent.
“We’re going to be 12-13 deep this season and that’s a good position to be in.
“The girls will have to fight for a place in the team and cannot become complacent.
“I think we’re looking really good this season and our target will be to again make the finals.”
Harrower added the Spirit will soon be announcing more signings following the conclusion of the SEABL season.
“We’ve recently signed Jane Chalmers and Kerryn Harrington and will be announcing a few more signings soon.
“We’re going to give the Lady Braves three weeks off because we think they really need to mentally get away from it for a while, but some of those girls will return.”
Harrower expects that the WNBL competition will be a lot tougher this season, with clubs recruiting aggressively.
“Dandenong will be a lot stronger this season. They have thrown a lot of money into recruiting this season so they will definitely be up there,” she said.
“Canberra is always tough and so is Sydney. I’ve also heard Logan has some good signings.”
Spirit’s first training session will be on August 28 ahead of their first match on October 10 against Canberra.
