Shock loss proves costly for Spirit

23 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
“WE were crap.”

That’s how Bendigo Bank Spirit coach Bernie Harrower described his side’s shock defeat to the lowly West Coast Waves in Perth yesterday.

West Coast had only won one game prior to yesterday and Harrower didn’t hold his frustration back.

“We couldn’t shoot the ball and we couldn’t defend. Mentally, the girls weren’t ready to play,’’ he said.

“Good teams find ways to win those games and we couldn’t do it.

“It’s very disappointing. It couldn’t have been a worse weekend for us.”

The 64-62 defeat combined with upset wins by Dandenong over Adelaide and Logan over Sydney, saw the Spirit drop from third to fifth on the Women’s National Basketball League ladder.

They’re now on the same win-loss record as Dandenong and Sydney and face an uphill battle to qualify for the play-offs.

To make matters worse, Spirit star Kristi Harrower has a sore Achilles for the second time this season.

She didn’t play the first half of yesterday’s game, but her father was forced to play in the second half in a bid to spark his side.

Despite playing so poorly, the Spirit did lead by six points midway through the final quarter.

But Bendigo’s offence stalled and the Waves stormed home.

Kristi Harrower had two free throws with three seconds on the clock to force the game into overtime.

She missed her first free throw and then missed the second attempt on purpose in the hope one of her team-mates would grab the rebound and force up a last-second shot.

Kelly Wilson came up with the rebound and got a shot away, but her attempt rimmed out and the Waves celebrated a rare win.

The Spirit only had themselves to blame.

They shot the ball at 32 per cent from the field, including a woeful 3-15 from behind the three-point arc.

“We missed open jump shots and we were even missing lay-ups,’’ Bernie Harrower lamented.

“It’s not good enough at this level.”

The Spirit now faces reigning premier Bulleen in Melbourne next Saturday night.

“Bulleen has no problem with scoring, so we have a lot of work to do this week,’’ Harrower said.
