Coach declares Daniels a certain starter for grand final

17 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
SYMES Motors Bendigo Braves coach Ben Harvey has declared veteran forward Ricky Daniels a certain starter for Saturday night’s SEABL east conference grand final.

Daniels missed the Braves’ semi-final triumph over the Kilsyth Cobras because of a knee injury.

There was some concern that the 39-year-old would miss the chance to play in his first SEABL conference grand final.

However, a strong training session on Sunday put paid to any doubts Harvey had about the former league MVP’s fitness.

‘‘Ricky is right to go,’’ Harvey said.

‘‘He trained well on Sunday and he’s very excited about playing in his first grand final.

‘‘It’s great for the team that he’ll be able to play because we did miss him in the semi-final.’’

The Braves host arch-rival the Knox Raiders in Saturday night’s grand final.

Most SEABL pundits were surprised the Raiders defeated Kilsyth in last Saturday’s preliminary final, but not Harvey.

‘‘You can never write Knox off,’’ he said.

‘‘They just know how to win and if you don’t play four quarters of good basketball against them they will hurt you.’’

Knox import C.J. Massingale was the hero for the Raiders, scoring 41 points, including three three-pointers in the final minute to pinch the win.

Harvey started the mind games yesterday by declaring his side the underdogs for the title decider.

‘‘Knox has won the past two championships and they’ve beaten us twice this year, so they have every right to be favourite for the grand final,’’ Harvey said.

The east conference crown is not the only prize on offer on Saturday night. The winner of the grand final qualifies for the SEABL championship game to be played on Saturday, August 28 at Melbourne Sports Aquatic Centre.

The SEABL championship game is a battle between the east and south conference champions.

The south conference grand final will be played between Geelong and Hobart in Geelong this Saturday.

Saturday’s grand final in Bendigo starts at 7.30pm.
