THE Bendigo Teslstra Braves begin life without sacked import Matt Trannon in the toughest possible fashion tonight.
The Braves travel to Frankston to play a Blues side that hasn’t been beaten at home this season.
While the Braves (10-11) are fighting for survival in the South East Australian Basketball League east conference, the Blues lead the south conference with an imposing 17-2 record.
Frankton also doesn’t have the internal issues the Braves have endured this week.
The Bendigo club had its first training session without Trannon on Thursday night and coach Wayne Larkins was pleased with how it went.
“Training was really positive,’’ Larkins said.
“Matt leaving the club is not going to solve all our problems, but it will help bring the team together.
“Frankston is having a tremendous season, so it’s going to be a tough game.
“But we’re looking forward to the challenge.’’
The club terminated Trannon’s contract so he could return to the United States to be with his family.
Larkins said he was undecided about how he would structure his starting five in Trannon’s absence.
With the Braves not expected to beat Frankston, tomorrow’s home game against North West Tasmania will be a better indication of where the club is at.
NW Tasmania (6-13) has struggled this season, but the Thunder did defeat the Braves 108-90 earlier this season.
A second defeat to the lowly Thunder would suggest the Braves probably don’t deserve to compete in the play-offs. Tomorrow’s game at the Schweppes Centre starts at 2pm.
The Bendigo IGA Lady Braves will be keen to return to form when they travel to Frankston tonight.
The Lady Braves (10-6) have lost four of their past five matches and are in danger of losing contact with the top two.
Frankston (5-9), which is led by Bendigo Spirit guard Dee Butler, has had a disappointing season.
On paper the Lady Blues have a better squad than their 10th place on the ladder would suggest.
Lady Braves coach Jeremi Moule will be hoping for a more even spread of scoring from his squad.
They have had an unhealthy reliance on star guard Kelly Wilson of late.
The Lady Braves have a sound 6-2 road record and should get the points.
The Lady Braves will host the Australian under-19 Gems in a trial match at the Schweppes Centre on Tuesday night.
The Gems squad includes former Bendigo junior Kerryn Harrington.
The Gems are using the game as a lead-up to the upcoming world championships in Thailand.
Tuesday night’s game starts at 7pm and entry is by gold coin donation.
Former Bendigo Braves junior Matthew Dellavedova had five points, six rebounds and three assists as Australia defeated Spain 69-62 at the World Under-19 Championships in New Zealand yesterday.
The Australians are unbeaten after two games and play Syria this morning in round three.
