Braves to attack Cats

19 Mar, 2010 09:18 AM
SYMES Motors Bendigo Braves coach Ben Harvey expects his side’s gruelling pre-season program to play a major role in tonight’s clash with the Geelong Supercats at Bendigo Stadium.

The Supercats are a perennial power in the South East Australian Basketball League and have a very good record against the Braves.

However, in comparison to the Braves, the Supercats have had a light pre-season and Harvey is hoping that match fitness edge will help his side clinch the points.

“Physically, I know we’re ready,” Harvey said.

“We’ve had six trial games plus last week’s game against Ballarat and I know that Geelong only had one trial game.

“It’s in our favour that we get to play Geelong early in the season.”

The Braves couldn’t have been more impressive in thrashing Ballarat last weekend, while Geelong looked rusty in splitting its road trip to the AIS.

The Supercats could be bolstered for tonight’s game by the return of Adelaide 36ers swingman Nathan Herbert.

“I think we match up pretty well with Geelong this year,” Harvey said.

“Geelong’s strength over the years has been the depth of their Australian content and this year we have that depth right down to our 10th player.”

One of the match-ups of the night will be the clash between Braves import Luke Meyer and Geelong star Jason Reardon.

“Luke is a very good defender, so he’ll probably get the job on Reardon,” Harvey said. “Luke will be better for last week’s game and I’m sure he’ll have a big game for us.”

Braves power forward Ivan McFarlin will reacquaint himself with Geelong import Ismail Muhammad.

McFarlin (Oklahoma State) and Muhammad (Georgia Tech) played against each other in the NCAA final four in the United States in 2004.

Muhaamad’s Georgia Tech defeated McFarlin’s Oklahoma State 67-65 in the semi-final.
