Bendigo Braves to play conference grand final on home court

09 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
THE Symes Motors Bendigo Braves will play in their fifth SEABL conference grand final in six years after defeating the Kilsyth Cobras 57-55 in Saturday night’s major semi-final in Melbourne.

In one of the lowest-scoring finals in SEABL history, the Braves didn’t score in the final six minutes of the game ,but somehow managed to hold off the fast-finishing Cobras.

‘‘Whether we won by two or 20, it doesn’t matter, the important thing is we won and we get to host the grand final on our home court,’’ an elated Braves coach Ben Harvey said.

‘‘For three-and-a-half quarters we were great. We struggled down the stretch, but we now have two weeks to work on what we need to improve on.

‘‘It’s a fantastic result for the club. To get the grand final in Bendigo is massive. We’ve seen in the past how important it is to have a packed Bendigo Stadium ... it’s like us having a sixth player on the court.’’

The Braves looked to have the game in their keeping when they led 57-41 with 6.24 remaining.

However, the home side produced a stirring comeback and had a chance to level the scores in the dying seconds, but a Matt O’Hea field goal attempt was off the mark.

In the final six minutes, the Braves were 0-7 from the field and committed six turnovers.

‘‘Kilsyth went into a zone [defence] and we just didn’t handle it,’’ Harvey said.

‘‘Things got a bit tight at the end, but we got through.’’

The win gives injured veteran Ricky Daniels an extra week off to prepare for the final.

‘‘Ricky was very excited after the game,’’ Harvey said.

‘‘We made a point just before we went on the court that we wanted to win for Rick.’’

Centre Ivan McFarlin and underrated forward Adam Tanner led the way for the Braves.

McFarlin scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Tanner added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Luke Meyer had a poor shooting night, scoring seven points, but his defensive effort to keep Kilsyth star Fernandez Lockett to just three points was one of the major reasons why the Braves won.

‘‘That’s the second time this year that Luke has kept Lockett to less than four points,’’ Harvey said.

Kilsyth was best served by Ryan Bathie, who scored a game-high 23 points.

The Cobras now host the Knox Raiders in the preliminary final next Saturday night. The winner of that game will travel to Bendigo for the grand final against the Braves on August 21.

The winner of the east conference grand final will qualify for the SEABL championship game against the south conference champions on August 28 at Melbourne Sports Aquatic Centre.

The Geelong Supercats will host the south conference grand final after they upset Nunawading, 93-82.

The Spectres are at home to the Hobart Chargers in next Saturday’s preliminary final. Hobart put an end to Sandringham’s season, with a comprehensive 90-70 win in Melbourne on Saturday.
