THE Symes Motors Bendigo Braves are gaining momentum in time for the South East Australia Basketball League’s season tip-off.
Bendigo’s line-up notched another impressive victory in Saturday night’s clash with Diamond Valley.
After several promising practice matches, the Braves again were unstoppable in their 40-point defeat of the Valley.
Bendigo Braves coach Ben Harvey said the Diamond Valley game allowed the team to try new things in the lead up to a new season.
“We played very well and we’re getting better and better as the season draws closer,” he said.
“We tried different players in different positions and tried out new sets.
“Although we won the match by a lot, we still set targets for ourselves.”
The Braves’ US import, Luke Meyer again impressed.
Harvey was also rapt with the play of several Australian players, who also had an effect on the game’s result.
“Luke Meyer had 33 points from 26 minutes, so he was very impressive,” he said.
“Chris Hogan scored six from eight in three-point territory and scored 18 points and was also fantastic.
“The Australian content was again superb, and Kevin Probert played really well.
“He played fantastic basketball and ran the team really well.
“The little things like that, and even though Kevin didn’t score much, it’s what is going to make the difference for us between winning and losing.”
The Braves have a lot to look forward to in round one of the SEABL season, with the game marking Braves star Ricky Daniels’ 150th match as well as the unveiling of the Braves new-look uniform.
“I just found out it was Ricky’s 150th game this week,” Harvey said.
“And we’re likely to unveil the new uniform in the lead-up to round one.
“We’re really looking forward to our first game and one of our aims is to win every one of our matches at home.”
The Braves will play their final practice match this weekend at Kilsyth before they gear up for The Courier-Bendigo Advertiser Cup clash with Ballarat on March 13 at Bendigo Stadium.
