THE Symes Motors Bendigo Braves have their last chance to secure top spot when they take on Mt Gambier tonight at The Icehouse.
Whether the Braves finish the home and away season on top of the Eastern Conference table will also depend on Kilsyth’s result against Geelong tomorrow.
Braves coach Ben Harvey said although it would be an achievement to finish the season in top spot, he was certain his team could win an away final should it not happen.
“It would have been nice to secure top spot, but we did drop some games we shouldn’t have.
“It would have been great to secure a home final, but either way we think we can beat Kilsyth in Kilsyth or at home.”
Despite not considering a top place finish the most important factor for the Braves, Harvey still thinks his team is in with a chance.
“I personally think Geelong will beat Kilsyth tomorrow night because it is very tough at home and hasn’t lost a game in eight rounds.
“If we beat Mt Gambier tonight we’ll go to top.”
The Braves met Mt Gambier three weeks ago and registered an 11-point home-court win against the Pioneers.
Harvey is not taking his team’s final match against the Pioneers lightly and said Mt Gambier was likely to come out firing on its home court.
“For Mt Gambier it is about playing for pride.”
“I think tonight’s game is very important. I’d be very disappointed if we lost.
“But once the game is done tonight we’ll be on to preparations for next week.”
With the play-offs in mind, Harvey said his team had proven in recent weeks that it could win under pressure.
“We realise that if we lost to Ballarat last week and then lost to Mt Gambier this week then we could have dropped to fourth.
“That is some serious pressure to be under, but we have already come through against Ballarat.
“The good thing about any sport is that it really comes down to being able to turn it around when we need to and we were able to do that last weekend against Ballarat.”
“We have dropped a few bad games, but fortunately we had a great start and have really had a great year.”
The Braves are likely to rest guard Kevin Probert tonight, who is recovering from a calf tear.
