Basketball tournament a cash cow

27 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
ORGANISERS estimate the annual Bendigo Skin Ski and Surf Junior Classic basketball tournament that tipped off yesterday is worth as much as $2 million to the city’s economy.

The tournament, which finishes tomorrow, has attracted 166 teams and more than 1300 players from across the state competing in boys and girls age groups from under-12s to under-18s.

“We’ve got a fairly wide range of teams competing this year,” tournament director Gary Dumaresq said yesterday.

“There’s a lot of regional teams, ranging from Mildura, which has 20 teams, to smaller associations like Echuca and Maryborough.

“We also have some city associations in Sunbury, Nunawading and Frankston that have brought teams up.

“It’s a very family-orientated tournament, so we’d think with the players and the families who have come to Bendigo for the tournament that it’s probably worth $1.5 million to $2 million for the city.”

Games are being played on 13 courts at the Bendigo Stadium, Flora Hill, Girton Grammar and Maiden Gully.

Bendigo is well represented with 18 squad teams and is the defending champion in both the under-18 boys and girls divisions.

“Those two teams look to be fairly strong again, so we’d hope they can go well again this year,” Dumaresq said.
