In-form Storm eyes hat-trick

08 May, 2010 05:00 AM
AFTER 23 games Strathfieldsaye coach Clint Whitsed is hopeful the penny has dropped for his playing group.

The BFNL’s youngest club will today attempt to win its third match in a row for the first time in its short history.

After starting the season poorly, the Storm has scored strong wins over Castlemaine and Kangaroo Flat in its past two games and will start favourite against Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve today.

But it’s more than just the wins that has the Storm turning heads.

This season the Storm is playing a more attractive brand of football with plenty of run and a higher efficiency rate by foot.

“The way we’re playing at the moment is what I’ve been talking about with the boys since day one,” Whitsed said yesterday.

“It takes time for it to work and for guys to realise how you want it to work.

“In the past couple of weeks we’ve been able to string some good games together and the boys have seen how well it works and it becomes a lot clearer.”

Whitsed is not getting carried away with the results, but is keen to have a crack at the competition’s big three - Golden Square, Eaglehawk and South Bendigo.

“In the past few weeks we’ve played teams that are around the same mark as us,” Whitsed said.

“We had a big test against Eaglehawk at the start of the season and were soundly beaten.

“Now that we have some confidence it will be interesting to see how we go against the top sides.

“At the moment it’s week-by-week and we have to focus on trying to beat Gisborne this week.”

The Storm’s first trip to Gardiner Reserve last year was a nightmare for Whitsed.

The Bulldogs handed his side a 134-point hiding with the Storm kicking five goals for the match.

“We’ve got to get our hands on the footy first and use it well,” Whitsed said.

“That’s what we’ve done against Castlemaine and Kangaroo Flat and we have to have that same intensity again this week.”

With Gisborne light on for key position players, the Storm is likely to load up its forward 50 with three or four tall options.

Ryan Eastman, who was in brilliant touch in attack last week, and Kris Lea shape as the dangermen for Gisborne’s defence.

At the other end of the ground the Storm will be without exciting youngster Matthew Ladson, who has been selected by the Bendigo Bombers VFL side.

“As a club we’re rapt for Matt and we hope he does really well,” Whitsed said.
