EAGLEHAWK YMCA Athletics Club’s reign as No.1 team rolled on for a fifth consecutive year at the weekend’s Victoria Country track and field championships in Bendigo.
The Hawks withstood fierce competition to score 1645.5 points and retain the Margaret Saunders Country Cup at the Flack Advisory-sponsored titles.
Runner-up for overall team honours was Bendigo YMCA Harriers on 1330, ahead of Athletics Chilwell 1191, Wodonga 905, and South Bendigo 770.5.
The Hawks’ winning streak included retaining the Ex-Athletes Cup as leading women’s team.
The Borough scored 958.5 points to take honours ahead of Athletics Chilwell 733, Wodonga 496, South Bendigo 411, and Bendigo YMCA Harriers 398.
A superb weekend for Bendigo YMCA Harriers included a long-awaited victory as the No.1 men’s team. BYM scored 932 points to regain the David Kitt Memorial Trophy.
Eaglehawk was runner-up on 687 ahead of Athetlcis Chilwell 458, Wodonga 409, and South Bendigo 359.5.
Bendigo YM’s young gun Blake Pryse, who won gold in the under-16 pole vault, triple jump and long jump, was presented with the Joyce Lockyer memorial award to cap a great weekend on his home track.
Chilwell’s Ned Weatherley joined the list of Stuart Hunter memorial shield winners as most outstanding under-16 athlete.
Australia Day medal winners were Joel Baden, Chilwell, and Kate Ryan, Eureka.
