BENDIGO Senior Secondary College’s athletics team went on a medal-winning spree at the Victorian Secondary Schools’ Sports Association state championships at Melbourne’s Olympic Park.
The Lions snared two gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in the track and field action.
Nick Fitzpatrick won gold in the 200m for athletes with a disability, and was a silver medallist in the 100m final.
Fitzpatrick’s times were 30 seconds and 15.15 secs.
The in-form Kaine Leech raced to victory in the 17-years 800m.
Leech beat the two-minute mark as he won gold in 1 minute 59 seconds.
At the javelin, Louis Schenker acheived a best of 49.16m to claim the silver medal.
Brianna Dalrymple-Monro was a bronze medallist in the 18-20 years javelin. Her best mark was 31.80m.
On the track, Kirrily Burnett clocked a time of 2.31 to be third in the 18-20 years 800m final.
Andrew Buchanan was third in the 18-20 years 1500m in a time of 4.18, and was fifth in the 3000m showdown.The versatile Keely Trew leapt 10.07 to win a bronze medal in the 17-years triple jump, and threw a best of 27.60m to be fifth at the javelin.
The Lions had many other students perform well at the championships.
Alanaa Koch surpassed her personal best by a metre as she finished fifth in the 18-20 years triple jump.Erica Dalrymple-Monro was fifth in the 18-20 years high jump, and Katie Allen was fourth in the 17-years shot put.
In the long distance runs, Yvette Tuohey was 6th in the 18-20 years 1500m, and eighth in the 3000m race.
James Robertson was 10th in the 17-years 3000m event.
The BSSC also had Christian Pearse, 18-20 years high jump; Amanda Gawthrop, 18-20 years hurdles; and Sam Bruechert, 18-20 years discus; qualify for the state titles by starring at the northern zone finals at the La Trobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill.
Earlier in the year, the BSSC boys’ team contested the division one final in the IGA Knockout Cup, and the girls’ team won bronze in division two.
