Spirit loses to Capitals
6/10/2008 | THE Bendigo Bank Spirit suffered a 14-point loss to the Canberra Capitals at the Schweppes Centre on Saturday night in its start to the Women’s National Basketball League season. In a match that failed to reach any great heights as a spectacle, the Capitals were never headed from midway through the first quarter on the way to a 65-51 victory.
6/10/2008 | THE Bendigo Bank Spirit began its second season in the Women’s National Basketball League on Saturday night with a new-look team. Of the five players who started Saturday night’s game against Canberra at the Schweppes Centre, only captain Gabe Richards was part of the Spirit’s inaugural roster last season. Richards was joined in the Spirit starting five by recruits Eleanor Haring, Dee Butler, Kelly Wilson and Hanna Zavecz.
Bergmeier wins crown
6/10/2008 | STRATHDALE’S Ben Bergmeier was yesterday crowned Mr Teenager at the Victorian championships run by the Australasian Natural Bodybuilding Association. Bergmeier, 19, was judged No. 1 for his division in the contest held at at the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University. The victory was just several weeks after being runner-up at what was his first show. Bergmeier’s feat follows the success of training partner Grant Damon winning the same title a year ago.

6/10/2008 | WHEN trap shooter Kim Moroni is told to go and take a good look at herself in the mirror, she is happy to oblige. After her shotgun, the mirror at home on the family farm in Huntly is one of her most valuable training tools. A couple of nights a week, after she get gets home from school at Catholic College Bendigo, the 16-year-old stands in front of the glass, watching her reflection as she raises and lowers her gun as if aiming for the clay targets.

6/10/2008 | BENDIGO has sent an ominous warning to its rivals after a comfortable win over reigning premier Eaglehawk in Saturday’s opening round of the Bendigo District Bowls Association A1 pennant season. Bendigo won 105-72, claiming three of the rinks.
4/10/2008 | FORMER North Melbourne and Hawthorn forward Nathan Thompson says a return to his home club Kyneton isn’t in his plans for 2009. Thompson, who played his junior football with Kyneton, announced his retirement from AFL club North Melbourne last month. Asked yesterday if there was any possibility he could return to his struggling home club next season, Thompson told The Advertiser: “I really don’t know what I’m doing next year, but I doubt very much whether Kyneton would be in my plans.

4/10/2008 | THE 2008-09 Bendigo District Bowls Association opens today with Golden Square to host Castlemaine in the match of the round. Golden Square and Castlemaine both made the finals last season, finishing first and second on the ladder, and are again expected to finish in the top four this summer.
Spirit is all set to soar
4/10/2008 | THIS time 12 months ago coach Bernie Harrower and the Bendigo Bank Spirit were preparing to enter the unknown. For the Spirit, the 2007-08 season was its first in the Women’s National Basketball League. History shows the Spirit produced a respectable debut season, recording a win-loss record of 10-14 and finishing seventh. Tonight, the Spirit begins its second season with its eyes wide open.
Medallists cap super season
4/10/2008 | IT is far from uncommon for the winners of individual awards in team sport to shy away from the spotlight. Tim Wastell and Kellie Moller proved the typical humble award recipients this week after claiming best and fairest honours in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League. Wastell won the James Anderson Medal for his feats in division one, Moller the Loris Browning Medal for excelling in the women’s competition.
4/10/2008 | CANBERRA coach Carrie Graf says the Capitals are ready for the Bendigo Bank Spirit, regardless of whether Kristi Harrower takes the court or not in tonight’s Women’s National Basketball League season-opener. The week leading up to the tip-off for the 2008-09 WNBL season has been dominated by Harrower’s plans to join the Spirit after being cut from Russian Euroleague club UMMC Ekaterinburg.
Cricket hits off at Strath
3/10/2008 | THE Northern Rivers’ launch of the newly-named Milo In2Cricket program was held at Strathdale’s Beischer Park yesterday. In2Cricket is the new name for the former Milo Have-A-Go program and is aimed at introducing boys and girls to cricket. On hand for yesterday’s launch in Bendigo were new Victorian Bushrangers’ squad member Steve Gilmour, who was also part of Ringwood’s Premier Cricket premiership last season.
3/10/2008 | BENDIGO star David Pell will be aiming for another strong performance against the overseas raiders in this month’s Jayco Herald-Sun Tour cycling classic. Pell’s victory in the recently-run Grafton-to-Inverell clinched the national road series for title 2008. Pell, 27, was second on the opening stage of last year’s Tour, sandwiched between Matt Wilson and Baden Cooke, before going on to finish 11th in the general classification.
Geary kicks on with Roos
3/10/2008 | KANGAROO Flat has announced the first major signing of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League off-season by securing former Metricon Bendigo Bomber Shannon Geary. Geary has spent the past three seasons with the Bombers, in which he played 19 senior VFL games. He will strengthen the midfield for the Roos, who improved from no wins in 2007 to seven this year under coach Darryl Wilson, who has been reappointed for next season.
3/10/2008 | RUSSIAN Euroleague club UMMC Ekaterinburg has refused Kristi Harrower’s release to play for the Bendigo Bank Spirit. Harrower intends to play for the Spirit in the Women’s National Basketball League this season after UMMC Ekaterinburg cut her on the eve of the season just one year into her two-year contract.
Aces vie for titles
3/10/2008 | BENDIGO will host the National Squash Championships for the deaf this weekend. Several local competitors are hoping to challenge for the Australian title as Bendigo hosts the biannual event for the first time. Australian Deaf Squash Association secretary and local talent Jo Richards has had to withdraw from the event because of a knee injury. But Richards is still excited the biggest event on the national deaf squash calendar is being played in her hometown.

2/10/2008 | VICTORY in the Eaglehawk to Pyramid Hill cycling classic on Sunday would give Simon Bennett more than just one reason to be ecstatic with this season’s success on the road. Bennett, 24, goes into the race a top chance to win the inauguaral Myer Bendigo Classic road series.
