Two new trams are just the ticket

TWO new trams will soon rattle down Bendigo tracks as part of the city’s iconic Talking Tram Tours.

The latest additions to the fleet have been obtained as part of an initiative between Bendigo Tramways and the Salvation Army Employment Plus administered Work for the Dole program.

Tramways depot foreman Tim Blythman said the newly refurbished No.25 and No.44 trams marked the completion of a program which has been beneficial to all concerned.

“The program has allowed the 48 participants to improve their employment prospects by acquiring new skills and much-needed work experience,’’ he said.

“They have also gained a sense of belonging and pride as the projects evolved and moved towards completion.

“In 1972, tram No.25 was selected as one of only three cars to inaugurate the Vintage Talking Train Service for the Bendigo Trust.’’

No one would doubt that the Bendigo Tramways' paid staff and volunteers do a wonderful job. Yes - these trams cannot be 'run into the ground' by one selected tram having to frequently operate. However, it is disappointing to sometimes visit Bendigo and observe ex-Bendigo instead of ex-State Electricity Commission (operators of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo trams until closure) trams running this important tourist drawcard service.

I realise that the ex-Melbourne trams have sponsors, but it diminishes the appeal of this otherwise wonderful tourism attraction to have ex-Melbourne trams running up and down through Pall Mall instead of more 'authentic' trams.

Bendigo is not a part of Melbourne.

To everyone at the Tramways, a job well done! The two cars look an absolute treat. Can't wait to see them myself.
