STUDENTS at California Gully Primary School planted 130 trees yesterday ahead of National Tree Day this Sunday.
About 150 students worked hard digging, planting and mulching throughout the day.
Science teacher Dori Carroll said: "We're trying to give the kids the message that you can do positive things that can benefit the environment, no matter how small."
The students certainly did their bit to help the environment, planting over a 100 natives at the back of their school.
"It was quite barren and empty," she said.
"The area needed to have some vegetation, so we're putting some regrowth back down there and creating a more natural habitat."
On National Tree Day this Sunday, the City of Greater Bendigo will hold a community tree planting day at the Spring Gully Recreation Reserve.
Planting will take place at the Spring Gully Creek, opposite the Spring Gully Primary School, from 10am to 1.30pm.
In Mandurang, the Otis Foundation will also hold a tree planting project at its retreat properties.
Residents are invited to attend from 9.30am-4pm at 185 Tannery Lane.
A barbecue lunch will be provided at both locations and participants are asked to wear solid footwear and gloves.
