SEVEN candidates have nominated for the position of councillor in Flora Hill ward.

June Houlahan, Alec Sandner, Geoff Ferns, Karen Ward, Michael Toman and Anne King will go up against sitting councillor Julie Rivendell. The Advertiser hit the streets of Flora Hill ward yesterday to find out what locals will be considering when casting their vote.

We spoke to: Jack Hartney, 88, Flora Hill resident; John Costelloe, 77, Flora Hill resident; and Lynne White, 45, owner Crooked Chook, Flora Hill.

What are the issues for local government that matter most in Flora Hill ward?

Jack: I wouldn’t know. At my age I don’t get out a lot. I think the council does all right.

John: Water problems, like everywhere else. Lynne: Just to maintain good shopping facilities and support local businesses.

What are the characteristics you would like to see in your future councillor?

Jack: Someone sensible who is accustomed to public life.

John: Honesty if possible.

Lynne: Someone generally concerned about everybody’s welfare.

What infrastructure needs would you like to see your future councillor work on in Flora Hill?

Jack: To make Caroline Street a 50kmh zone. It is 60kmh at the moment.

John: The building of the new school is a good thing.

Lynne: The intersection out the front of Flora Hill Village needs addressing, it’s very dangerous.

Which council services including events would you like to see expanded and/or improved in Flora Hill?

Jack: You have a lot to do with council things when you get older. I’m happy with their services.

John: Keep up the good garbage collection service.

Lynne: We’ve been trying to get another recycling bin for a long time. Also more cleaning up of litter in public areas.

What do you enjoy most about living in Flora Hill ward that you would like to be sustained by your future councillor?

Jack: I think where we are we are very well situated.

John: I just like Bendigo.

Lynne: All of the people, they’re really supportive. They’ve made me feel welcome.

How could your future councillor better respond to what the community wants?

Jack: I’m quite happy with how things are. I have no complaints with them at all.

John: Listen to them.

Lynne: Get out into the community rather than sitting on a seat in an office.
