SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Andrew Brown’s hobby is a bit different from most people his age - he collects watches and cameras.
But just like the pieces in his collection, Andrew has a fascinating story to tell when you take a closer look.
He has only been an official member of the Golden City Collectors Association for about two or three years, but he is far from new to the world of collecting.
“Because of my dad’s involvement I’ve been around the club nearly all of my life,” Andrew said.
“They’ve been very good to me; they are all really nice people and go out of their way to help anyone.”
Andrew collected his first watch at just one year of age.
“I got a gold pocket watch for my first birthday from my parents.
“What started me on collecting watches was Dad still had his first watch that he got in 1971.
“It was a mechanical wind-up one and I was fascinated with it, and it’s gone from there.”
Andrew now has about 40 watches and about 50 cameras, which is a shared collection with his dad.
Their most valuable piece is an old German camera worth about $1400.
Andrew will be displaying his collection at this weekend’s Annual Arms and Collectables Show at the Kangaroo Flat Leisure Centre.
The show will be open from 9am to 5pm tomorrow and between 9am and 3pm on Sunday.
