Old sport shows how

AUSTRALIA’S top horsemen and women showed some fine form on the weekend at the annual Lockington campdraft.

The curious event attracted some even more curious onlookers to the Scurrah Reserve yesterday for the final day of competition.

People took advantage of the free entry to look over what organisers describe as the oldest horse sport in Australia.

Believed to have originated here between 1880 and 1890, campdrafting is a time-trial event where horse and rider work together on set tasks.

Historians say it evolved as a more formal contest of the inevitable competition between stockmen and drovers about who had the best horses and were the best riders.

Mounted competitors each select a cow from a group of eight and then manoeuvre it through a pre-determined course in 40 seconds.

The best demonstration of control, riding ability and speed wins.
