Musical mates say it's time to bow out

11/11/2008 10:06:00 AM
SUNDAY, November 23, will mark a special and sad occasion for two local musicians.

Edmund Beilharz, OAM, and Jean Lehmann will perform at the Bendigo Chamber Choir Christmas concert for the last time together.

As close friends they have shared a passion for music for many years.

The concert will be the final directorship for Mr Beilharz after 12 years of leadership and education of the group.

Ms Lehmann’s role as leader of the chamber orchestra will also come to an end.

Mr Beilharz recalls performing chamber music with Ms Lehmann almost 20 years ago, soon after she came to Bendigo.

She became an integral part of the music community and, in particular, the Ravenswood Trio with Mr Beilharz.

When the chamber choir was formed she brought together talented musicians from around the district to expand the repertoire.

Mr Beilharz’s 2007 Medal of the Order of Australia reflected his commitment to quality musicianship, which grew from tinkling on a decrepit piano as a child in a detention centre near Tatura during World War II. He spent about six years behind barbed wire.

The concert starts at 2.30pm in Bendigo Town Hall. Tickets can be bought at the door or booked via The Capital on 5434 6100.
