FCV captures championship

11 Sep, 2009 09:38 AM
FOOTBALL Central Victoria’s under-14 boys’ team capped a brilliant season by winning the metro north-west championship.

The Bendigo Bank-backed FCV line-up dominated the final round clash on the Sunshine Georgies pitch.

A 4-0 victory kept FCV a point clear of the Geelong Regional representative team in the title race.

Despite a rough surface and smaller pitch dimension at Maidstone, the FCV team attacked and linked passes well all match.

At least four shots in the first few minutes were excellently saved by the Sunshine ‘keeper.

In the fourth minute, the ball fell to Thomas Leech inside a crowded penalty area. He gained half a metre of space and fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Sayle Johnston, Matt Smith and Adrian Holland were once again resolute in the centre of FCV’s defence, and Brett Maher and Kai Lane-U’ren fed the midfielders from the wide positions.

In the 20th minute, Brett Maher switched the ball from the right to the left and found Leech in space to put Jake Sartori in behind the defenders.

Sartori’s cross into the six-yard box went to an unmarked Maher to score FCV’s second goal.

Goalkeeper Rob Munday had little to do, but continued to shout encouragement and clean up the crumbs as required.

Despite its dominance, Bendigo had some trouble beating the Georgies goalie.

The keeper denied Johnston at least three times, and Leech, Sartori and Finn Huzzey also had shots saved.

In the 10th minute, a powerful long throw from Sartori was flicked on by Adrian Holland for Matt Smith to head the ball into the net from eight metres.

Wave after wave of attack by Bendigo was thwarted by a desperate defence.

With only five minutes left, Bendigo was awarded a penalty for handball.

After much encouragement from his teammates, skipper Sayle Johnston stepped up to take the kick.

Johnston has gone close to scoring all year, but hadn’t been able to get the ball over the line.

He coolly placed the ball just inside the right hand post with a precision shot and enjoyed the enthusiastic cheering from his mates and supporters.

The FCV under-14 squad comprises Robert Munday, Adrian Holland, Sayle Johnston, Matt Smith, Brett Maher, Kai Lane-U’Ren, Finn Huzzey, Cal Gibson, Malcolm Durno, Thomas Leech, Jake Sartori, Matt O’Brien, Andy van Heumen, and Nathan Pollock.

“In difficult conditions and against a determined and physical opposition, the boys put on a superior performance,’’ said FCV coach Chris Hain.

“In some ways it was probably our best game of the year.

“Despite the pressure that came from having to win to take the title all of the boys played with confidence, composure and belief.

“Everyone of the boys did what was asked of them in a well-balanced team effort.

“I know how hard they have worked and how committed they were to success this year and I couldn’t be more delighted for them.

“They are developing into a group of fine footballers and their conduct on and off the field was exemplary.

“I am very proud to be associated with this group of fine young men.

“The football family of central Victoria should be extremely proud of this squad.’’
