TODAY Zoe Fawcett will do what doctors told her was impossible. But impossible is not really a word in Ms Fawcett’s vocabulary.Born severely deaf, Ms Fawcett, 24, will today graduate as a teacher from La Trobe University. Her parents were told that she would not progress past grade 4.“You need to go for your goal,” Ms Fawcett said.“Keep fighting – I grew up to believe that you can do anything.”Ms Fawcett will graduate as a primary and secondary school teacher and is teaching Auslan (Australian Sign Language) at Bendigo South East College. She was born with sensorineural bilateral hearing loss, which meant she has moderate to severe hearing loss.“There have been a lot of challenges, but I’ve been willing to fight them,” she said. “You have to fight along the way. My parents have been there for every step.”Her mum Jacqui Fawcett, who is also a teacher, said Zoe’s journey had been a long road but she was extremely proud of her.“We didn’t find out till she was three years old that she was deaf,” she said. “There has been lots of hard work and struggles.“She did year 12 over three years. I know her last year of uni was hard.“We’ve always said just keep chipping away. Reading was a very difficult subject but we just kept working at it.“Sometimes parents can give up a little too easy. You just need to keep trying. “There has been a lot of tears but we’re so proud of her, we’re proud of both our daughters.“Zoe has always had the opportunity to choose her own path.”
