Youths arrested after North Bendigo crime spree

23 Feb, 2012 10:53 AM
POLICE are searching for the victims of a spate of thefts from cars in the North Bendigo area.

Sergeant Greg Gentry said three youths were arrested this morning after police caught them breaking into a car on Holdsworth Road.

"They had a lot of other property on them so we are expecting a few more calls this morning," he said.

Sergeant Gentry said police had recovered mobile phones, iPods, GPS and a significant amount of cash.

He urged any victims of theft overnight to contact police, even if not much was taken, of if the car had been left unlocked.

"We need reports so we know what they have done," he said.

To report a theft call the Bendigo police station on 5448 1300.

This sort of thing is only going to get worse as times get tougher, we need a tougher legal system to match it.

Well done Bendigo police. Greg is right about a tougher legal system needed to act as both punishment and a deterrent.

Parents not to blame??? My oath they are. Just let youths out during the night they will not do anything wrong.

I would almost bet their punishment will be less than what it is for using a phone while driving, probably even get a meal or two..........

Greg, this has nothing to do with tough times. This has to do with bored youth with no respect for the law. Agree if the law was tougher they might have a healthy fear of it!

We have had many things going missing from homes/sheds/ garages/ cars, locks being cut etc... the culprit was caught by locals & was held until police arrived, the police did nothing to get the items back & the culprit was roaming the streets again the same day & this was a repeat offender. I think if anything should be done it needs to be harsh & the same punishment for all. A slap on the wrist is just not good enough these days as youths do not have any respect for authority or other peoples property it seems....

Epsom Area: how true, bring back the old cop and his ways, and....if I ever caught the lowlife buzzards they'd be sorry they ever stepped foot on my property again! These lowlifes need to be hunted out of the district....plenty of forests around, they act like ferals!

Youth delinquency can occur at any socioeconomic level these days. I wonder whether these kids are also victim of a system that gives them no education and/or employment opportunities? It doesn't excuse their behaviour, but there are many factors, poor parenting is one of them. Nowhere to go and nothing meaningful to do is another.
