Young father's appeal dropped over primary school burglaries

12 Mar, 2010 10:57 AM
A YOUNG father believed to be involved in a spate of burglaries at local primary schools is back behind bars.

Matthew Mason (also known as Matthew Bolton) was taken into custody last week after police allegedly observed him and five other youths unloading stolen computer equipment from a car. Mason was on bail pending an appeal of a nine-month jail sentence at the time.

However, the Bendigo Magistrates Court reinstated the sentence yesterday after defence lawyer Clare Vierboom told the court Mason would abandon the appeal.

The youths who are aged 15 and 17 and Mason, aged 20, are alleged to have broken into five primary schools, a church, a milk bar and the Salvation Army in Mundy Street during a five-day crime spree last week.

About $10,000 worth of computer and sound equipment is alleged to have been stolen.

They were arrested about 5am last Friday.

Mason, who was sentenced to jail in February after he pleaded guilty to charges relating to a three-car pile-up, was the only youth taken into custody.

At the time, Mason was serving an intensive corrections order for previous driving charges.

He will return to court in April.
