Young driver charged over incident at Golden Square Woolworths

19 Mar, 2010 09:29 AM
POLICE have charged a 20-year-old Bendigo man with serious traffic and dishonesty offences following an incident in Golden Square on Wednesday night.

Sergeant Brad Towers said police were at the Woolworths Supermarket in Golden Square when they were approached by an unknown shopper who pointed out a male they believed had been shoplifting.

When police attempted to speak to the man outside the store, he jumped into his car and sped out of the car park, he said.

Sergeant Towers said the EA Ford sedan was then alleged to have been involved in a minor accident in the Golden Square area and that it was later seen travelling along Marong Road with only three wheels. He said police caught up with the man shortly after.

“He was subsequently arrested by police, interviewed and charged in relation to dishonesty matters, alcohol offences and serious driving offences,” Sergeant Towers said.

The 20-year-old has been bailed to appear in the Bendigo Magistrates Court in May.

The incident occurred at 8.30pm.

Witnesses who saw the man at the supermarket or driving from Golden Square towards Marong are urged to call Bendigo police on 5448 1300.
