“YARN Bombing” is the new craze that has hit Bendigo.

The group responsible for decorating a tree near the Bendigo Visitor Centre and surrounding posts wants to remain anonymous, but says it is all a bit of fun.

“It is about working with wool and making people warm and fuzzy in winter,” a spokeswoman for the group said.

The street art was first seen during last Saturday’s Bendigo Community Farmers Market.

“It was International Yarn Bombing Day, so we wanted to do something in Bendigo,” the spokeswoman said.

“Yarn bombing is more prevalent in Melbourne, not so much in Bendigo.”

She said she was happy with the community’s response.

“Only a couple of the ball beanies have been taken off, but I think it has managed to put a smile on people’s faces as they walk past.

“I know of a few people who have gone up to the tree and touched it – it is all about drawing people in.”

The spokeswoman was not willing to disclose information about the group involved, saying it was more mysterious to keep it a secret.

“I think it adds to the fun,” she said. “We are not trying to be political it is just about being creative and brightening up the streets of Bendigo.”

She said people should be on the lookout for more examples of yarn bombing.
