Winds batter Bendigo

06 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
BENDIGO avoided major damage as wild weather passed through parts of the state yesterday.

SES spokesperson Jilly Charlwood said yesterday was relatively quiet despite strong winds and afternoon thunderstorms.

“We only had 15 calls for assistance in the mid west over the course of the day,” she said.

“One incident in Allpress Drive, Golden Square, saw a tree come down causing a traffic hazard. It has since been cleared.”

Northerly winds averaging 15 to 20km/h picked up to a maximum of 61km/h in Bendigo.

However, the windiest conditions in the state were measured at Mount William in the Grampians where gusts reached 115km/h.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Blake said the worst was over for the region with winds dropping to moderate overnight and a cooler westerly change anticipated.

“Sunday was the worst day of the period and a change has gone through there now,” he said.

“Temperatures out in the western parts of the state have fallen below 20 degrees and it will be a lot easier to sleep tonight.”

Mr Blake said there would be a cool change soon, with Bendigo’s temperature expected to drop towards the end of the week.

“It was quite uncomfortable with the wind, and the temperature reaching around 29 degrees,” he said.

“The change has gone through now though and we can expect fine conditions maybe through till Thursday and Friday when showers will pick up.”
