THREE year 11 students are encouraging Bendigo people to join a campaign to live for five days on a food budget of $2 a day.
Girton Grammar School student Sarah James and Bendigo Senior Secondary College students Megan Smith and Eliza Maybury have rallied students and staff to join the Live Below The Line campaign.
The Australia-wide campaign involves people living on the equivalent of the average daily income of someone in extreme poverty.
Sarah said her involvement in the Make Poverty History Roadtrip in May inspired her to participate in the Live Below The Line campaign.
“A child dies every three seconds from preventable causes.
“That’s one statistic that really stands out to me.”
She said people could support the students by visiting the website www.everydayhero.com.au/team_incr edible.
“Two dollars is less than I normally spend on a bus ticket, so it’s going to be hard. But 1.4 billion people do this every day and have to pay for much more than just food, so I’m sure I’ll find a way.’’
Sarah said she would starve for five days but it would be for a good cause.
“I expect to be extremely hungry, but not as much as starving children are.”
She said it was great for the schools to combine for a worthwhile cause.
“It’s really good to link with a private school.’’
Eliza said the campaign was student driven at both schools.
The trio hope to organise a celebratory event on Friday night for all participants.
