BENDIGO police are urging parents of children planning a party to monitor online social networking sites in a bid to stamp out late-night violence.
Senior Sergeant Mark Edwards is pushing for an end to teenage violence and said eliminating gatecrashers was the best place to start.
“Gatecrashers want nothing more than to upset the party and cause trouble,” he said.
“Parents need to be mindful of how their kids are broadcasting the party.
“You may only send out 50 invitations, but if the word gets out on Facebook or Twitter that number could easily double.”
The warning comes after police were called to an 18th birthday party at Maiden Gully that was ruined by gatecrashers.
Senior Sergeant Edwards said the parents had taken the right precautions and hired security, but the night ended when 100 unexpected guests flocked to the hall.
“The parents did all the right things; they registered the party with police, they hired security and they used wristbands,” he said.
“It’s an example of parents doing everything right, but because of loose lips, at the end of the night it turned ugly.”
Senior Sergeant Edwards said anyone planning a celebration should notify police, who will do their best to monitor the party and make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.
“They need to come into the police station and fill out a party safe form, which are checked every night,” he said.
“If there is a party on we’ll do our best to drive by and provide that extra security, but we can’t be at every party all the time so we’re really encouraging parents and kids to be proactive.”
