BENDIGO tourism is booming, according to figures released by the Visitor Information Centre this week.
Despite fears that ongoing work in the CBD would deter visitors, the new figures indicate the centre has achieved a turnover of almost $1.6 million, against $1.18 million last year and $890,000 in 2006-07.
City of Greater Bendigo tourism executive manager Kathryn Mackenzie said the figures were indicative of the city’s growing tourism sector.
“Always when you do new works, whether it be at home or in the public space, it’s going to cause inconvenience, but I think visitors appreciate a growing city.
“Bendigo is not just an old historic city any more - we’re a contemporary city, a growing city and a thriving city with a gorgeous heritage backdrop, and people are really excited about that.”
Visitor Information Centre revenue represents accommodation sales, tour bookings and ticket sales for major events. Much of the revenue generated by the centre flows directly into local businesses in the tourism industry, as only a small commission is retained.
“Great figures like this in times of financial difficulty can be attributed to our strong marketing campaigns during winter and summer, exceptional drawcard exhibitions at Bendigo Art Gallery - such as the Archibald and Couture - and to great service delivery by our staff supported by great systems,” Ms Mackenzie said.
“When visitors come to Bendigo, they don’t just go to a conference or one event - they shop, they eat out and they go sightseeing.
“People really are staying longer and spending more.
“The Visitor Information Centre is the first place new visitors come to, so it’s important that our staff work hard to provide the best possible service for them.”
